Career Description
As a Medical Radiographer (X-ray Technologist) you will use sophisticated imaging equipment to image parts of the human body. In this challenging field, you will assist physicians by producing images of diagnostic quality. As you perform medical imaging procedures, it is your responsibility to explain the process to the patients, position them and the equipment correctly and adhere to the principles of radiation protection. You must also know how to maintain equipment, process images and keep patient records. Jobs are found in hospitals, but you can also find employment in physicians’ offices, clinics, diagnostic imaging centers, temporary staffing agencies and mobile units.
Employment Outlook
In Arizona, Medical Radiographer positions are expected to increase 20% or more in the next 10 years. Medical Radiographers earn an average of $12.07 to $29.82 an hour for an average salary of $25,106 to $62,026 a year.
Accreditation
The Medical Radiography program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) and graduates are eligible to apply for admission to the certification exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Passing the ARRT exam and licensure by the Arizona State Medical Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners (MRTBE) is necessary for employment. GateWay Community College has had an excellent pass-rate on this exam.
Transferability
Graduates may advance in their profession by seeking a bachelor's and master's degree in a related field.
