Career Description 

As a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer you will operate sophisticated ultrasound imaging equipment under the direction of a physician. Ultrasound creates images of the patient’s anatomy to assist doctors in diagnosing medical problems. You must have patient care skills in order to explain the procedure to patients, position them correctly, and perform the sonographic examination. In addition, you must be knowledgeable about disease processes, and the care and maintenance of ultrasound equipment.

Employment can be in hospitals, clinics, physicians’ offices and imaging centers.

With the development of new ultrasound procedures, Diagnostic Medical Sonographer positions are expected to increase 30% or more in the next 10 years. Diagnostic Medical Sonographers earn an average of $18.17 to $36.16 an hour for an average salary of $37,800 to $72,320 a year.
