Certificate of Completion in Clinical Research Coordinating  

Program Admission Requirements

There are three ways a student can qualify for admission to the program. A student need meet only one of the following conditions:

Option I: Have a professional health care license, certification or registration plus two years work experience in a health care field.

Option II: Permission of the program director based on evaluation of comparable work experience.

Option III: Have two years work experience in a health care field without a license, certificate or registration, plus completion of the coursework described below (13 credits total) or its equivalent. Students must earn a grade of "C" or better for all required courses.

A basic computer course for windows applications will be required if students do not have these skills.

Required Courses for Certificate of Completion in Clinical Research Coordination

Once admitted to the program, students are required to complete the following courses with a grade of “C” or better to receive a Clinical Research Coordinator Certificate.

All students MUST know and be able to perform basic computer functions and have a working knowledge of basic computer applications such as: emailing with attachments, cut, copy, paste, edit, internet searching, printing, saving files, left and right mouse functions, and be able to use Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat Reader, and text/notepad applications.  A personal or business email address is also required.  A personal or business computer system with Windows 98 or higher, internet access and email, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat applications is also needed. The GWCC college computer center has computers available for students and can issue a free email account, if needed.

An Associate of Applied Science in Clinical Research track will start in the fall, 2006.  Students who have taken CRC courses prior to fall 2006 will have the courses counted towards the degree track. Please contact the CRC program Director for more information.

Credit by Exam for Introduction to Clinical Research CRC120 only

For students who have at least 2 full time years of clinical research coordinating experience within the previous 5 years, a "Credit by Examination" for CRC 120, Introduction to Clinical Research is available. This is the only course in the program with a credit by examination option. A student, who is approved to take this exam by a CRC program representative pays the exam costs, and then passes the exam can earn course credit and proceed to the next courses in the program. The exam consists of 200 questions that focus on the course competencies. See CRC 120 course syllabus. A student must adhere to the listed policy and procedure below for credit by examination.

Policy

  • Credit awarded through Credit by Examination does not count as hours in residence for graduation requirements.
  • Students may take the examination only one time. 
  • Students may not request the examination of a course while currently enrolled in the course. 
  • Students may not request the examination to establish credit in a previously completed course. 
  • Students may not request the examination to establish credit for a lower level of a course in which credit has been received.\
  • Fees are not refundable after the examination has been administered, regardless of results. 
  • Grades of A, B, C, D or P will be posted to the transcript. Grades of F, Y, or Z will not be posted for this examination.
  • Students should pay and take the examination the same day authorization was given by Admissions and Registration/Records office.
  • Students who fail the examination must complete course CRC 120 before taking other program courses.

Procedures

  • Student submits a program application to Cris Wells with an additional written request to take credit by examination for CRC 120.
  • Student will be contacted by a CRC program representative for denial or approval to take credit by examination, based on previous direct CRC experience and educational background. (Admitting and Registration will be notified by a program representative of a student's approval or denial to take exam.) 
  • Students may go to GWCC library and study from the following books for the test;

  • After student has received CRC program approval to take credit by examination for CRC 120, student goes to Admission and Registration, obtains and completes the CRC 120 Credit by Examination form and pays the established fee of $134.00.
    · Student then takes the completed exam form to the Assessment Center and takes the exam. The exam should be taken the same day as payment is received. This is a closed book test with no time limit, except to complete the test the same day. A photo ID is required. The Assessment Center hours are Monday through Friday 8:15 AM to 5:00 PM.
  • The completed exam will be forwarded to the CRC Program Coordinator for grading and the exam grade will be returned to the Admissions, Registration and Records Office for appropriate posting. This process takes approximately a week to complete.
  • Student needs to pass examination with a minimum grade of 80% to receive credit by examination for this course.

Arizona resident students are required to show evidence of having a current health care provider CPR card before graduation. CPR courses are available at GateWay Community College as well as many other locations including the American Heart Association.

New Electives: 

These are not required to qualify for the CRC certificate. They are optional elective course offerings.  Students must complete CRC 120 before registering for any electives or receive permission from the program director.
